Threads of Love: The Relationships Between Mother & Child
Design Challenge
Design a cohesive visual identity for a collection of three books—What My Mother & I Don’t Talk About edited by Michele Filigate, You’re Wearing That?: Understanding Mothers and Daughters in Conversation by Deborah Tannen, and I’ll Show Myself Out by Jessi Klein. The design should visually capture both the harmony and contrast inherent in these relationships while enhancing the emotional themes of each book.

Design Narrative
To cohesively link the three books—What My Mother & I Don’t Talk About edited by Michele Filigate, You’re Wearing That?: Understanding Mothers and Daughters in Conversation by Deborah Tannen, and I’ll Show Myself Out by Jessi Klein—the yin and-yang imagery was employed to symbolize the delicate balance between mothers and daughters, while acknowledging their inherent differences. This imagery reflects the complex dynamic of these relationships, highlighting both harmony and contrast.
The use of color plays a key role in emphasizing the themes of each book. Each hue was carefully chosen to resonate with the core messages of the works. In the context of motherhood, pink symbolizes compassion, red denotes empowerment, blue reflects patience, green signifies protectiveness, and yellow represents future optimism. These colors were thoughtfully paired with each book to visually enhance its message, creating an emotional connection with both mothers and their children. The deliberate color choices invite readers to reflect on the multifaceted nature of maternal relationships, deepening the impact of the books’ narratives and themes.

Outcome
The final design successfully captures the delicate balance of harmony and contrast inherent in mother-daughter relationships by integrating yin-yang imagery and a carefully chosen color palette. Each book cover visually represents the unique emotional themes of its narrative. Together, the cohesive visual identity enhances the emotional resonance of each book, allowing readers to connect deeply with the multifaceted nature of these relationships, while the interplay of colors and imagery unifies the collection as a whole.
